PURPOSE:To properly perform defrosting of a heat-pump type air conditioner during the heating period by a method in which the defrosting operation is made only when the change with time of temperature difference between a coil temperature sensor and an open air temperature sensor is in an increasing state all the time and exceeds the limit line of allowing the startup of defrosting by a given temperature difference between both temperatures. CONSTITUTION:During the heating period of a heat pump type air conditioner, the temperatures of a coil temperature sensor 8 provided to a heat exchanger to be an evaporator and also of an open air temperature sensor 9 are detected, and the difference between both the temperatures is stored and calculation of the change with time of the temperatures is made for comparison by a micro computer 10. In this case, startup of defrosting is not made until the sensor 8 becomes 0 deg.C or lower, and defrosting is made only when the change with time of the difference between both temperatures detected by the sensor 8 is in an increasing state all the time and exceeds the limit line of allowing the startup of defrosting by a given temperature difference of both temperatures.
