PRODUCTION OF SPHERICALLY TIPPED FIBER

PURPOSE:To decrease considerably the variance in coupling efficiency between a spherically tipped fiber and a light emitting element by forming a spherically tipped part to the end of an optical fiber and heating and polishing said part by electric discharge. CONSTITUTION:Only the tip 6 of the spherically tipped fiber 5 is heated by using arc discharge to relieve strain from the tip 6 and to clean the tip 6. Said tip is so formed that the fiber 5 can take effectively light therein, i.e., the performance intrinsic to the spherically tipped fiber. The variance in the coupling efficiency between the spherically tipped fiber and the light emitting element is decreased and the average value is increased.
