The method is intended for producing a mat as lining for a bird box or nest, partic. for pigeons or canaries, or a bird transport basket etc., whereby a layer of fibres of the desired thickness is formed and the fibres are interconnected to obtain the mat. The fibres are connected by piercing the layer with needles whereby the fibres consist at least in part of jute, coconut, cellulose or similar materials which permit such connection by piercing. These fibres may be mixed with a proportion of fibres such as straw and/or with shredded paper or cardboard which materials cannot themselves be interconnected in this way but are bonded into the mat by piercing.
