A hydro-mechanical mechanism (76, 82) which opens the relief valve (78) near the top of the compression stroke of the engine has its timing optionally adjusted by means of a hydro-mechanical means (86) provided in the exhaust valve actuating mechanism (76) to reduce the clearance in that mechanism to a value which maximizes the retarding power developed by the engine whenever the system is activated. Check valve (130) permits oil to enter chamber (114) to prevent piston (118) from retracting into bore (112), whilst hydraulic pressure is supplied via line (72). <IMAGE> |
