The object to be weighed and measured passes along amoving belt (41) which incorporates the weighing device (40) and through the light window (1) before being carried away by the output conveyor belt (61). In the window, the object passes through a large number of vertical and horizontal light beams generated by low power gas losers and steered by semi-silvered mirrors. The signals from the beam detectors are fed along an electrical bus (31) to a data processor (51,52). The speed of the input belt is used to control a clock circuit (50) to ensure that the belts and real-time processing are synchronised.
