The process comprises reaction of oxalic acid ethyl monoester with ethyl chloroformate in the presence of triethyl amine. This gives a mixed anhydride of formula H3C-CH2-O-CO-O-CO-COOH2-CH3. This is then reacted with a phenyl diamine of formula (II) where R is a lower alkoxy or alkyl group or nitrile and R' is H or Cl2, tetrahydrofurane, dioxane and/or methylene chloride at -10 to +25 deg.C.
