PURPOSE:To obtain a polyester having highly improved electrostatic adhesiveness and good heat resistance and transparency, by adding an Mg compound and Co compound at a specific ratio to any stage till the completion of the initial condensation reaction of PET, and adding a P compound thereto dividedly in two or more portions. CONSTITUTION:A polyester having main repeating units consisting of ethylene terephthalate is produced. In the process, an Mg compound and Co compound in amounts satisfying the following relation; 30<=Mg<=400, 3.0<=Co<=50 and 4.0<= Mg/Co<=150 (Mg and Co are amounts to be added in ppm expressed in terms of atoms based on the polyester, Mg/Co is the atomic ratio) at the same time are added to any stage till the completion of the initial condensation reaction, and a P compound in an amount satisfying the following relation; 0.8<=(Mg+Co)/P<=10 [P is the residual content of P atoms in ppm based on the polyester; (Mg/Co)/P is the atomic ratio] is added dividedly in two or more portions thereto.
