PURPOSE:To enable high-speed mass scanning to be performed by dividing an electromagnetic coil for producing a magnetic field for mass spectrometry and connecting the divided sections of the coil to an excitation current power supply by switching these sections between serial connection and parallel connection. CONSTITUTION:Excitation windings 2 and 3 with the same winding number are attached around the electromagnetic yoke 1 of a magnetic-field-type mass spectrometer for producing a mass spectrometry magnetic field. The windings 2 and 3 are connected to an excitation current power supply 5 through one usually- closed contact (NC) of a relay 4 for switching between serial connection and parallel connection and its usually opened contacts (NO) and (NO'). The relay 4 is operated according to the speed of mass scanning to perform switching between serial connection and parallel connection. Therefore, since the inductance for parallel connection is 1/4 of that for serial connection, the intensity of the magnetic field increases at a speed twice that for a conventional mass sepctrometer, high speed scanning can be performed even in a low mass range. Furthermore, it is possible to perform mass spectrometry of a high mass range where high speed scanning is not required. |
