PURPOSE:To eliminate reaction of lithium with a heat insulating material at high temperature to prevent self discharge or internal short of a battery by using zirconia fibers as a heat insulating material in a battery whose negative electrode is a lithium alloy. CONSTITUTION:A unit cell 1 consists of a negative electrode layer made of lithium-aluminium alloy, an electrolyte layer comprising a LiCl-KCl eutectic salt and magnesia powder, and a positive electrode layer mainly made of iron disulfide. The unit cells 1 are mutually stacked with heat generating agents 2, and they are accommodated into a container with a heat insulating material 7 of zirconia fibers filled between them to form a thermal battery. When the battery is used, current is applied to an ignition unit 8 to ignite the heat generating agents 2, and the battery is heated to operating termperature to activate it and generate power. Reduction of insulating material and generation of electric conductive material caused by reaction of lithium with heat insulating material 7 at high temperature is prevented. Therefore, self discharge and internal short of a battery is prevented. |
