PURPOSE:To suppress high peak voltage in the initial stage of activation by forming a positive electrode by adding stainless steel powder to iron disulfide of positive active material, and making sulfur produced by heat decomposition react with stainless steel powder. CONSTITUTION:Unit cells 4 are mutually stacked with heat generating agents 5, and they are accommodated into a container 11 with heat insulating material 10 filled between them to form a thermal battery. When the battery is used, current is applied to an ignition unit 8 to ignite the heat generating agents 5, and the battery is heated to operating temperature to activate it and generate power. The unit cell 4 is comprised of a negative electrode layer of lithium impregnated in a porous body, a molten salt electrolyte layer 2, and a positive electrode layer 3 prepared by adding 1-30wt% of stainless steel powder to iron disulfide which is main component. By making sulfur produced by heat decomposition of iron disulfide react with stainless steel powder, high peak voltage in the initial stage of activation can be removed. |
