PURPOSE:To secure sufficient photodetector sensitivity and to read a radiation image by arranging the waveform converting fluorescent material of the storage fluorescent material sheet which receives accelerated phosphorescence from the fluorescent material and emits fluorescent light within the sensitivity wavelength range of the photodetector between the storage fluorescent material sheet and photodetector. CONSTITUTION:Light emitted by an exciting light source 2 passes through a slit 2 to illuminate the storage fluorescent material (BAFBr:Eu) sheet 1, and then radiation image information recorded in a fluorescent material layer 1B on a transparent substrate 1A is projected. The light projected by the fluorescent material layer 1B has the long-wavelength component cut by a filter layer 1C and illuminate the wavelength converting fluorescent material layer (ZnS:Cu) 1D. The fluorescent material layer 1D receives the accelerated phosphorescence having a peak at 390nm and emits fluorescent light in a band with a peak at 550nm, and the light is photodetected by respective photoelectric converting elements 3 of a line sensor 3, whose output signal is read by a scanning circuit 3B. Therefore, the radiation image is read with sufficient sensitivity.
