With the process for separating bulk material, an automated, precise and economical separation of various bulk materials such as coal, refuse, gravel, crops (potatoes, fruit, cereals, kernels, seed) into qualitatively different categories such as, for example, useable and unusable parts, is obtained. Furthermore, monotonous and harmful manual work is avoided. Precise separation of bulk material increases its quality and permits more effective recycling. The essential component assemblies of the process are a metering unit 8, a ring of transmission and reception device combinations 1, 2, 3, 4, a data processing device 11 and a separation unit 7. The metering unit 8 dispenses the parts of the material to be separated sequentially in a controlled manner. The parts are transferred individually and sequentially for diagnosis into the ring of transmission and reception device combinations. For diagnosis, the transmission devices transmit signals to the reception devices and in the process partly encounter the parts of the bulk material. This changes the signals received by the receivers. The qualitative and quantitative signal change is the basis for the control of the separation unit 7. <IMAGE>
