In an open-end rotor spinning machine having a plurality of spinning units which each contain a spinning rotor, these spinning rotors are mounted in radial and axial aerodynamic bearings. There is provided a cleaning device which can be introduced into the open sides of the spinning rotors after the respective spinning unit has been opened. To avoid damaging the aerodynamic bearings during cleaning when the operative drive of the spinning rotors is interrupted, particularly the axial bearing is relieved by an additional axial force, the device for applying this additional axial force being combined with a brake for the spinning rotor. The spinning rotor is moved out of its operating position in the axial direction and braked.
