The invention relates to a method for two-way optical data transmission which, at low cost, enables in particular a very broadband transmission from a central station (exchange, switching centre) to a subscriber with simultaneous relatively narrowband transmission from the subscriber to the central station. An optical waveguide is used as a transmission channel which has a substantially larger core diameter than a conventional single-mode optical waveguide and which effectively has a single-wave characteristic for the light transmitted by the central station, whereas a multi-wave characteristic is provided for the light transmitted by the subscriber.
