The invention relates to a method and a device for continuously determining the quality of fuel gas. Whereas known devices are expensive to build and maintain, the advantageous invention is intended to provide a very simply producable measuring device which functions in a maintenance-free fashion even in the case of a relatively long operating time. For this purpose, the invention employs acoustic properties which change in sympathy with changing gas quality by making use of the resonance frequency of a resonating system for the purpose of identification. This is performed by using a partial current to generate oscillations in the resonance system, the frequency then experiencing an electroacoustic conversion. Use is made of a resonance tube and a sensor for mechanical vibrations, which sensor generates via a frequency-measuring instrument a signal which corresponds to the gas quality and can be utilised to control a gas pressure governor, for example.
