PURPOSE:To sense the excessive lowering of a wick during burning and at the same time contrive to improve the extinguishment safety by a method wherein the lowering of the wick is once stopped at the predetermined position and the normal extinguishment is performed by manually operating a wick lifting knob. CONSTITUTION:When the extinguishment is intended, a knob 42 is pivoted by hand in the direction to lower a wick and consequently the wick 32 is lowered to a first extinguishment position (c) and the burner fires are extinguished. After that, when the knob 42 is pivoted in the direction to lift the wick for the re-use of a burner, an actuator 46 pivots along the taper of a stopper 39e and clears the stopper 39e against the resistance smaller than that produced by pivoting in the direction to lower the wick and reaches the position to bring the wick to its highest position (a). On the other hand, when the burner is subject to shock such as earthquake, violent fall or the like, a vibration sensing device 43 is brought into actuation and consequently the engagement between the engaging part 39a of a rotor 39 and the locking body 46 is disengaged, resulting in pivoting the rotor 39 in the direction to lower the wick by means of the energizing force of an extinguishing spring 44. Said pivoting motion is transmitted from an actuator 41 to a wick lifting shaft 34, resulting in lowering the wick instantaneously.
