An apparatus (21) is proposed for picking up contaminants, in particular oil films and oil lumps, floating on the surface of bodies of water. The apparatus (21) consists of a floating body (1) with an essentially stable floating position and of an inflow funnel (2) which is vertically adjustable relative to the floating body (1), tapers towards the bottom and has an overflow (3) in the area of the water surface. The overflow (3) can be adjusted both below and above the water surface, it being possible to provide the overflow (3) with special conveying elements. In a method according to the invention, the apparatus (21) is connected to two floating barriers (16, 17) in order to form a horizontal collecting funnel (18) which is either anchored against the flow or the wave direction or wind direction or is propelled through the body of water against the flow or the wave direction or wind direction in order thereby to form a narrowing flow channel. <IMAGE>
