Butt welding pipe ends

For the butt welding there is provided a ring of weld material 1 having a rebate or recess 2,3 in each end face and about the inner periphery of the ring to provide seats for respective pipe ends 4,5. The pipe ends are located in the seats to hold the ring in position during fusing of the ring to form the butt weld.
