PURPOSE:To improve the efficiency of a welding operation and to perform automatic welding with high quality by teaching and reproducing respective weld lines with respect to both welding directions in overhead position and teaching separately the generating point and end point of arcs with respect to both welding directions. CONSTITUTION:The operator operates a switch 113 for setting a reference point of an operation box 10 and moves a welding head 3 by a switch 112 for selecting traveling directions. The operator sets the welding head by stopping the same at the reference point 11 (A, B). The operator sets a teach mode by a mode switch 111 and teaches the arc starting point SA (or SB) and welding end point EA (or EB) in the direction A (or B) and the weld line therebetween according to the inclination thereof. The data thereof are stored in a storage part 83. The welding in the direction A is executed counterclockwise and the welding in the direction B is executed clockwise. The welding conditions are changed between SA-SB and EA-EB where the beads overlap to avoid build-up of the bead surfaces.
