A linear actuator mechanism is disclosed wherein rotary motion from a motor is converted to linear motion of a carriage by the engagement of a drive wheel coupled to said motor rotating to engage a timing belt. The timing belt and the drive wheel have interengaging teeth. A support frame includes a rack imprinted with teeth matching those of the belt. Two idler rollers, affixed to the carriage, maintain, with constant tension, the belt in contact with the rack except in that portion which passes around the drive wheel. Rotation of the drive wheel thus causes linear translation of the carriage. The timing belt either is rigidly affixed at each end to the support frame or loops endlessly around the the idler rollers and the driving wheel.
|
