PURPOSE:To perform gradation control at high gradations and enhance image quality, by a method wherein the rotating position and speed of a platen roller are detected to thereby achieve high-accuracy positioning, and transferring energy according to density variations based on variations in the shape of a picture element is supplied. CONSTITUTION:A pulse encoder 12 is connected to a DC motor 11 for driving the platen roller 6, and a position-detecting means 13 and a speed-detecting means 14 are connected to the encoder 12. A calculating means 19 calculates the transferring energy for a desired density from the gamma characteristic corresponding to the feeding speed of the platen roller 6, and the transferring energy corresponding to the gradation of an image to be recorded is supplied to a thermal head through a signal-processing means 18 and a signal-outputting means 15.
