PURPOSE:To enable maintenance of high desulfurization activity for a long period by constituting the titled catalyst so that the inner part has narrow pores of specified average narrow pore diameter and is porous components consisting essentially of alumina deposited with active metal and the surface layer part is components consisting essentially of specified clay mineral. CONSTITUTION:The titled catalyst is constituted so that the inner part of the catalyst has narrow pores of <170Angstrom average narrow pore diameter and >=0.3cc/ g narrow pore volume and is porous components consisting essentially of alumina deposited with at least one kind of active metal (for example, V and Ni) and the surface layer part of the catalyst is components consisting essentially of at least one kind of clay mineral selected from the group of sepiolite, halloysite, attapulgite, palygorskite and asbestos. The catalyst is able to maintain high activity in desulfurization, demetaling and asphaltene decomposition for a long period.
