PURPOSE:To enable tools for heavy articles to be exchanged easily without causing interference or energy loss in a narrow space, by providing three positions of a retreating position, a tool exchanging position and a revolving position as the operation positions of a tool exchanging apparatus. CONSTITUTION:For exchanging tools after finishing a working operation, a block and an arm 92 are advanced to the exchanging position 115, where the arm 92 is revolved by 90 deg.. A cutter is thereby engaged within a gripper B and a stopper is engaged with the cutter so as to press the same. A bracket 30 is then moved to disengage a cutter 16 from a bar. Subsequently, the arm 92 is shifted to the lowering position, whereby the rod is engageably fixed by a fixing ring 93 and the cutter 16 is extracted from the shaft to allow the block and the arm 92 to advance to the revolving position 117. The arm 92 is revolved by 180 deg. at this position so that the gripper is positioned on the shaft side. The block and the arm 92 are then retreated to the exchanging position 115 so that the cutter 16 is positioned on the axis 116, and the arm is further moved to the elevating position. The bracket 30 is then shifted to the elevating position and the cutter is mounted thereon.
