NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I (X is H, Cl or F; Y is Cl or Br; R is H or 1-4C alkyl). EXAMPLE:N-( 4-chloro-2-fluoro-5-O,O-diethylphosphonophenyl )-3,4,5,6-tetrahydrophthalimide. USE:A herbicide having a high activity with sligth phytotoxicity. PREPARATION:A tetrahydrophthalic anhydride of formula II is reacted with a compound of formula III, e.g. O,O-diethyl-5-amino-2-chloro-4-fluorophenyl phosphonate, in or without a solvent, e.g. acetic acid, e.g. at 60-200 deg.C.
