PURPOSE:Light irradiation to a specific alpha-azohydroperoxide in an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of an oxidizing agent enables high-yield production of biphenyl in no need of high temperature and high pressure with safety and no problems on energy consumption. CONSTITUTION:The condensation reaction between an aromatic hydrazine and an aldehyde, followed by oxidation, gives an alpha-azohydroperoxide of formula I [R1, R2 are H, 1-4C alkyl, aryl, polycyclic aromatic aryl where R1=R2= -(CH2)4-7-; R3 is aryl which may be substituted by halogens, polycyclic aromatic aryl which may be substituted by halogens] and, preferably an oxidizing agent such as 1,4-naphthoquinone are dissolved in an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent of formula II [R4 is H, methyl, ethyl, methoxy, X (halogen)] such as benzene and irradiated with light of, e.g., high-pressure mercury lamp and/or heat at a temperature lower than the boiling point of the solvent in an inert gas atmosphere such as Ar gas under normal pressure to effect radical decomposition of the compound of formula I into a biphenyl.
