Filling material, e.g. for cushions, pillows, quilts, is made by converting filamentary tow into a zigzag form over the rips of interdigitating bending plates, pref. carried by confronting endless conveyor belts. The zigzag array is melt-cat and fusionbonded at the bend regions to form individual separated loop-like portions of filling material resembling feathers. Pref. one of plates is rigid and the other set is flexible, both sets being secured to their belts by endwise sliding into transverse belt grooves of butts on the plates. High speed prodn. of artificial feathers is provided, e.g. from polyester filamentary tow. |
