PURPOSE:To produce the titled glass at a lowe temperature than that in the conventional melting method simply in a short time, by dissolving an alkyl silicate, Al alloy salt and Mg metal salt in an alcohol, spraying the resultant solution in a high-temperature zone, and thermally decomposing the solution. CONSTITUTION:An alkyl silicate, e.g. tetraethyl silicate, and an alcohol-soluble Al metal salt, e.g. Al2(SO4)3, and alcohol-soluble Mg metal salt, e.g. MgSO4, are dissolved in an alcohol or a mixture solution thereof with water to give 44- 65wt% SiO2, 25-43wt% Al2O3 and 10-16wt% MgO respectively expressed in terms of SiO2, Al2O3 and MgO contents. The resultant solution is then sprayed in a flame or a heating zone and thermally decomposed. Thus, the aimed cordierite glass powder can be produced at a much lower temperature than that in the melting method of the conventional technique in a simple step in a short time.
