PURPOSE:To obtain the titled intermediate having low absorption loss caused by OH group, by making a pipy clad part by a flame hydrolysis reaction, inserting a completely dehydrated glass rod for core into a central hole of it, dehydrating and sintering a composite material structure so that it is integrated. CONSTITUTION:A glass raw material (e.g., silica blended with fluorine) for clad is deposited on the outer periphery part of a rod or pipy starting material having a smooth and clean outer pheripheral face by flame hydrolysis reaction. Then, the starting material is pulled out, a previously and completely dehydrated glass rod (e.g., pure silica glass rod) for core is inserted into the prepared hallow part of the pipy soot deposite for clad, to give a composite material structure. It is then dehydrated, sintered, melted, and integrated in a fluorine compound gas-containing atmosphere, to give the desired intermediate for single mode fiber consisting of a core part and a clad part. |
