PURPOSE:To produce a polyester having high quality, continuously for a long period, by carrying out the polymerization of polyester using a specific reactor maintained in a hot vacuum state and containing a rotor which is a cage frame free from the shaft in the cage and furnished with stirring blades extended vertically at the outer circumference of the frame. CONSTITUTION:The vertical reactor connected 4 to a vacuum-generation means and having a heating means 2 (thermal medium jacket) is constructed of a cage frame 6 free from the rotary shaft in the frame and furnished with a rotor 5 having stirring blades 9 extended vertically and attached radially to the outer circumference of the frame 7. The clearance between the blade and the inner wall surface of the reactor is <=10mm., preferably 0.5-10mm.. A polyester (especially PET) and/or its oligomer having an intrinsic viscosity of 0.1-0.9 is supplied 3 to the reactor, and the stirring blades are rotated at a circumferential speed of >=0.5m/sec, preferably 0.5-7m/sec to effect the continuous polymerization of the polyester and/or its oligomer in the course of flowing down along the inner wall of the reactor in the form of a thin film.
