PURPOSE:To simplify the conversion processing in a character recognizer by storing stroke end point information and the number of times of scanning specification information at scanning for every character in a dictionary collating means for storing a standard pattern and converting only specific strokes into a vector at collation. CONSTITUTION:Characters on a blank P are converted into digital data by an A/D convertor 7 and stored in a picture memory 8. A stroke detector circuit 10 converts the readout character into strokes in four directions of A-D. End points of strokes and connection information in each direction are stored as two- dimensional address information in a RAM12. In a ROM11, time specification information of stroke tracking, end point information of strokes and a feature series of standard patterns are stored as a dictionary in storage areas by character. Standard patterns corresponding to the readout character patterns by means of programs are narrowed, redout strokes corresponding to feature strokes of the standard pattern are converted into a vector and finally the collation and recognition are executed.
