PURPOSE:To speed up an input of a Japanses sentence having characters with a small number of strokes by catching roughly the complication of input character lines and by changing the number of dimensions of recognition in accordance with the complication. CONSTITUTION:A detecting/segmenting part 21 segments out characters one by one from information stored in an image buffer 20. A roughly grouping part 22 selects a candidate of a standard pattern referred at the time of discrimination and calculation in accordance with the complication of the character obtained from numbers of horizontal and vertical lines. A normarizing part 23 and a sampling part 24 make an input pattern into a multiple sample pattern 32 after they enlarge and reduce the input pattern. A discrimination/calculation circuit 25 discriminates and calculates the sampled pattern 32 and a pattern of a standard pattern storage part 27 having a complicated structure or that of a standard pattern storage part 28 having a simple structure and finally outputs an answer.
