PURPOSE:To provide a safe antioxidant with such antioxidative ability as to be equal to or greater than than of tocopherol, consisting chiefly of a specific organogermanium compound. CONSTITUTION:The objective antioxidant consisting chiefly of an organogermanium compound of general formula [R1 and R3 are each H, (substituted) phenyl, or alkyl; Z is O, or S]. Said compound can be prepared as follows; for example, in the case of a sesquioxide with the Z being O, trichlorogermanium and an acrylic acid derivative are made to react each other to form a trichlorogermylpropionic acid derivative, which is then, e.g., hydrolyzed; whereas, in the case of a sesquisulfide with the Z being S, said trichlorogermylpropionic acid derivative is dissolved in an anhydrous solvent followed by passing, in the presence of anhydrous pyridine, dry hydrogen sulfide gas.
