PURPOSE:An external drug, obtained by incorporating a percutaneous absorption promoter containing an ether compound of a specific glycerol or polyglycerol with an alcohol in a base, and capable of remarkably increasing the percutaneous absorbability of a drug effect component. CONSTITUTION:A percutaneous absorption promoter containing an ether compound of glycerol or polyglycerol with an alcohol expressed by formula I or II(R1-R4 are H, 1-24C saturated or unsaturated straight chain or branched chain aliphatic hydrocarbon, etc.; n R4s may be the same or different except when all R1-R4 are H; n is an integer 0-60) as an active component is contained in a base to enhance the percutaneous absorbability of an external drug. The amount of the promoter to be added is preferably 0.01-5wt% based on the total amount of the external drug. In use thereof as a base, the amount of the promoter to be incorporated may be >=10wt%. The promoter can be formulated in either one of hydrophilic and hydrophobic bases, and a drug effect component sparingly soluble in water can be dissolved in the hydrophilic base in a high concentration.
