PURPOSE:To increase the quantity of light passed through an optical shutter and to utilize effectively the light generated by a light source by making light which has an axis of polarization in a direction different from the original axis incident on the optical shutter so that the axes of polarization are in the direction. CONSTITUTION:The light beam 17 from the light source bulb 11 is split by a beam splitter 15; a light component having an axis of polarization in parallel to the paper surface is reflected as a light beam 41 and a light component having an axis of polarization perpendicular to the paper surface is transmitted as a light beam 43. The light beam 41 is reflected by plane mirrors 19-25 in order to have the axis of polarization turned by 90 deg. finally and enters PLZT27 as light having the axis of polarization in the same direction with the light beam 43. Then, PLZT27 intermits the transmission of the light beams 43 and 57 with a control voltage from a driving circuit 29. The transmitted light is further transmitted through a polarizing plate 31 and passed through a lens 33 to project pulse light as a light beam 61. |
