Fuels for IC engines comprise (a) a major amt. of a base fuel comprising 1-100 vol.% of a 1-4C alcohol and 0-99 vol.% of a fuel selected from gasoline, gasoline components and dimethoxyethane, and (b) a minor amt. of the reaction prod. (I) of an unsubstd. aromatic, nitro-substd. aromatic or aliphatic carboxylic acid or acid chloride and an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic amine. The fuels comprise 1-50 vol.% MeOH, 49-99 vol.% gasoline and 0.1-5 (esp.0.1-1) wt.% (I), which is the reaction prod. of o-, m-or p-nitrobenzoic, 2,4-dinitrophenylacetic or 3,5,6-trinitrosali-cylic acid (or acid chloride) and a 13-29C aliphatic amine. The most prefd. cpd. (I) is N-octadecyl-m-nitrobenzamide (Ia).
