A device is proposed which serves to heat in particular the passenger compartment of a motor vehicle. The heating device comprises a fluid-cooled internal combustion engine, a ventilation channel which is open to the atmosphere and to the passenger compartment and a heat exchanger which is connected to the engine cooling line and arranged in the ventilation channel. In the connecting line between engine cooling and heat exchanger, a pump assembly and a preferably electromagnetically actuable valve are arranged. When the working magnet is excited, the closing element of the valve is held in the closed position by the armature of the magnet and a valve rod leading from the said armature to the closing element. On the side facing away from the closing element, of the armature of the magnet, there is a space inside the valve housing. In order to ensure that the valve, in particular the space, is ventilated after the coolant circuit is filled, the valve rod has a ventilation bore which opens on one side into the space and whose other opening is located in a channel through which the coolant flows and which leads through the valve housing. When the valve closes, a partial vacuum is produced in the space, which vacuum is compensated by the subsequent flowing of the coolant.
