Chemically synthesized polypeptides contain sequences of amino acid residues, which correspond essentially to the sequences of amino acid residues in determinant parts of the T- and B-cell in a natural pathogen-related protein, particularly a hepatitis B-virus surface antigen (HBsAg). When administered to a host as they are, as polymers or vehicle-bound conjugates, the polypeptides induce the proliferation of thymus-derived cells in hosts who are immunized against hepatitis B-virus.
