Device for applying a protective layer to the welded or soldered seam of can bodies, having an application roller for the application of a coating compound to the inner side (15) of the can body within an area covering the seam, which roller has at least one recess (10) in a central area (9) of its central part (6) with an area width of less than 60% of the width of the central part (6) and the peripheral surface line (5) of which has at least one salient point and/or at least two inflexions in this central area (9). The invention makes it possible for the first time to achieve optimum layer thicknesses of the coating across the welded or soldered seam which are neither too little for the stresses which arise in the long-term storage of aggressive liquid nor too great for the tearing stress on the coating which occurs when the edges of the can body are beaded. Due to the design of the application roller, an optimum profile of the applied coating layer with the maximum layer thickness directly above the welded or soldered seam is obtained, something which was impossible to achieve with the hitherto known application rollers. <IMAGE>
