The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for the wrapping of entire piece goods, especially those which have been stacked without use of a pallet, with a tubular section of film (= tubular web of film) which is especially provided with gussets and is made of a material which shrinks when heated, in which method the tubular web of film, which is at first closed at one end, is pulled across a supporting surface in such a way that it rests with its closed end section on the supporting surface and is guided downwards by its lateral sections which adjoin the closed end section to a level situated below the supporting surface; the end section of the tubular web of film, which is supported by the supporting surface, is stacked with piece goods; the lateral sections are pulled over the lateral surfaces of the stack of piece goods; the other end of the tubular web of film is closed; and the packaging unit formed in this way is heat-treated, the edge sections of the open end of the tubular web of film being clamped before the tubular web of film is pulled over the supporting surface; the edge sections situated opposite one another in each case being moved away from each other to open the tubular web of film, moved downwards to a position below the level of the supporting surface and moved upwards essentially back to the original level once stacking with piece goods has taken place; the open edge situated at the top spreading until mutual contact has been made and, while forming a region of low pressure inside the wrapping ...
