NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I (X is Cl; n is 0-3). EXAMPLE:1-[8-Chloro-1(H),2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolin-1-ylcarbonyl]imidazole. USE:Herbicide and fungicide for agricultural and horticultural purposes: it has high safety and a wide range of herbicidal spectra, especially being suitable for use in weeds in rice paddies, Helminthosporium leaf spot of rice plant and black spots in cruciferous plants. PREPARATION:The reaction of a compound of formula II with a novel compound of formula III is carried out in an inert solvent at a temperature from -20 deg.C- the boiling point of the reaction mixture, preferably from 0-100 deg.C to give the compound of formula I. The reaction can be effected in the presence of an acid acceptor such as alkali metal hydroxide or triethylamine. The compound of formula III is obtained by reaction of a compound of formula II with trichloromethyl chloroformate or phosgen.
