NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (the bond on the benzene ring is o-, m- or p-bond). EXAMPLE:m-(3-Methacryloxy-2-hydroxypropyloxy)benzaldehyde. USE:A photopolymerizable monomer or a cure accelerator for the polymerization of a photopolymerizable compound containing ethylenic unsaturated double bond. It is non-toxic, has high photopolymerizability, and cures rapidly even in the form of a thin film. It promotes the cure of a photopolymerizable compound without lowering the physical properties of the cured resin, and is useful as a coating material such as paint, hard coat, etc., especially as a dental composite resin, dental hard resin, etc. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I wherein the bond on the benzene ring is m- can be prepared e.g. by condensing m-hydroxybenzaldehyde with epichlorohydrin in the presence of a basic agent, and reacting the resultant compound of formula II with methacrylic acid in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor and a catalyst.
