PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate of insecticide, etc., in a short process, easily and economically, in high yield and purity, by the rearrangement of a novel aryl halohydrin compound prepared by the reduction of an alpha-haloalkyl aryl ketone. CONSTITUTION:The compound of formula I (Ar is unsubstituted or substituted aromatic group; R<1> is alkyl; X is halogen) is reduced preferably with a metal or non-metal hydride, e.g. borohydride such as sodium borohydride or aluminum hydride such as lithium aluminum hydride at -70-+180 deg.C, preferably -40- +70 deg.C to obtain the novel substance of formula II. The objective compound of formula III can be prepared economically by carrying out the rearrangement of the compound of formula II at 10-300 deg.C, preferably 30-200 deg.C, especially 50- 180 deg.C.
