PURPOSE:To obtain an optimum storage charge amount by providing an overflow channel connecting directly the charge storage section and an overflow drain in a channel stopper so as to set variably an overflow suppressing level in the charge storage section. CONSTITUTION:The feature of this invention lies in that an N<-> overflow channel 8 connecting directly an N channel charge storage section and an N<+> overflow drain 3 is provided to a part of two P<+> channel stoppers adjacent to a position of a lower layer electrode 6 forming the charge storage section, the lower layer electrode 6 on the overflow channel 8 is notched, that is, the width of the lower layer electrode 6 is made small and the overflow channel 8 is covered only with an upper layer electrode 7. The electric charge is transferred by setting sequentially clock pulses phi1, phi2, phi3, phi4 to a high voltage value and the transferred charge is extracted externally as a picture signal.
