PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compounds, economically, by improved cumene process characterized in that a fraction containing an aldehyde having lower boiling point than acetone is separated by fractional distillation from the product obtained by the catalytic acid decomposition and neutralization of a peroxide, and the fraction is recycled to the catalytic acid decomposition process. CONSTITUTION:An alpha,alpha-dimethylarylmethyl hydroperoxide is subjected to the catalytic acid decomposition in the presence of acetone, followed by neutralization. The neutralized product or a fraction having lower boiling point than phenols and obtained by the distillation of the neutralized product is subjected to the fractional distillation to obtain a fraction containing an aldehyde having a lower boiling point than acetone. The fraction thus obtained is recyclced to the catalytic acid decomposition step. Each of the titled compounds can be separated from the fraction essentially free from an aldehyde having lower boiling point than acetone, and purified. A part of the crude acetone may be recycled to the catalytic acid decomposition step. The process eliminates the distillation process for the separation of the low- boiling aldehyde from the crude acetone. |
