In a belt drive arrangement, pulleys are driven off both the front and the back of the belt 20. The front of the belt 20 is configured to provide positive engagement with the front-driven pulleys (16,22,26). The back of the belt is flat, and at least one of the back-driven pulleys (38) has a circumference of a material which has a high coefficient of friction with the belt material. The back-driven pulley may be of metal, with a rubber tyre on it. <IMAGE>
