PURPOSE:To recover efficiently mercury by adding a soln. contg. Fe<2+> to mercury-contg. waste water and aerating the waste water after adjustment of pH then confirming the end of ferritization reaction and aerating quickly the waste water immediately after acid reaction to evaporate the metallic mercury. CONSTITUTION:The soln. contg. Fe<2+> is added to the mercury-contg. waste water then the pH thereof is adjusted to 10-12 by an aq. alkaline soln. The water is aerated to progress the ferrite reaction and is quickly aerated immediately after the end of the ferritization reaction of confirmed from the change in the concn. of the dissolved oxygen in the reacting liquid or the oxidation reduction potential to evaporate the metallic mercury from the reacting liquid. The evaporated mercury is discharged together with waste gas. The mercury is recovered by cooling and scrubbing of the waste gas and absorption by an acid. The treated water contg. Hg at <=1ppb is obtd. by the above-mentioned method.
