Process for the preparation of polytetramethylene adipamide in which a prepolymer-containing liquid reaction mixture is prepared by heating the salt of 1,4 diaminobutane and adipic acid in a first reaction zone at a pressure between 2 and 100 bars and in which the temperature of the prepolymer-containing liquid reaction mixture is maintained above its solidification temperature in a second reaction zone while the pressure is simultaneously reduced.
