PURPOSE:To eliminate inconvenience such as accidental erasure of other picture signal by setting the recording mode in response to the rewritten recording mode at rewrite when frame recording and field recording exist in mixture on one magnetic disc. CONSTITUTION:After an output from magnetic heads 2, 4 is amplified by head amplifiers 6, 8, the result is transmitted to a reproducing head selecting circuit 10 and a mode discriminating circuit 12. Then the mode discriminating circuit 12 discriminates whether the recording is field recording or frame recording and outputs a mode discrimination signal S1. In case of an unrecorded track, to mode discriminating signal S1 is outputted. The reproducing head selection circuit 10 transmits a head output to a video signal reproducing circuit 14 in response to the discrimination signal S1. In case of re-recording, the mode discriminating signal S1 is outputted as a mode decision signal S4, the recording mode is decided for the mode selection signal S2 selected by the user independently and re-recording is executed.
