PURPOSE:A base containing nitrogen or phosphorus is used as a cocatalyst together with a catalyst of an aluminum phenoxide to effect high-sensitivity ortho- alkylation of a phenol with increased catalyst activity. CONSTITUTION:In the ortho-alkylation of a phenol with 1-1.25 time molar amount of an olefin in the presence of a catalyst of an aluminum phenoxide, preferably derived from the same phenol as the feedstock, a base containing nitrogen or phosphorus is used as a cocatalyst at an atomic ratio of 0.0002- 0.8N, P/Al and the reaction is effected at 90-250 deg.C and 2-70kg/cm<2> pressure. The use of the cocatalyst can complete the reaction in a shorter time under same conditions and permit the reaction at lower temperature and pressure. |
