When halogenated hydrocarbons are extracted from waste waters using an aromatic-compound-free paraffin fraction as an extractant, according to the invention this extractant is contacted with the waste water in the presence of a sorption-promoting soluble additive. This can preferably be a higher alcohol, in particular decanol, but it can alternatively advantageously be a non-ionic surfactant or an electrolytic compound. A temporarily stable dispersion can preferably first be produced from the extractant with addition of the sorption-promoting agent and this dispersion is then contacted with the waste water. By means of the invention, the range of the compounds which can be economically separated off is enlarged and the expenditure of extractant and/or treatment time is reduced.
